What misconceptions did you have about seeing a psychiatrist before your first appointment?
I'm thinking about scheduling an appointment with a psychiatrist, but I've realized that a lot of what I think I know about psychiatric care comes from things I've heard from other people, movies, or random discussions online.
The more I read, the more I wonder whether some of my assumptions are completely wrong. For example, I used to think psychiatrists were only for people dealing with very severe mental health conditions. Now I'm seeing that many people seek psychiatric care for anxiety, depression, sleep problems, ADHD, and other issues that affect daily life.
I also hear conflicting opinions about what appointments are actually like. Some people make it sound as though psychiatrists only prescribe medication and don't spend much time understanding what's going on, while others describe a much more collaborative experience. As someone who has never been to a psychiatrist before, it's hard to know what's accurate and what's based on stereotypes.
I'd be interested to hear from people who have firsthand experience. Looking back, what were the biggest misconceptions you had before you started treatment? Was there anything about the process that surprised you once you actually met with a psychiatrist?
Part of the reason I'm asking is that uncertainty has probably been one of the things preventing me from making an appointment. Hearing from people who have been through it might help me separate myths from reality and feel more comfortable taking the next step.
